What is donor egg program?
This is a process through which one woman (donor) donates her eggs to another woman (recipient) so that later can have a baby.
What are steps involved in the donor egg program?
The process initiates when the donor’s ovaries are medically stimulated to generate multiple eggs in a single cycle. The eggs are removed with a needle place on an ultrasound probe through her vaginal tissues. The eggs are aspirated (suctioned) from the ovaries.
After the eggs are retrieved, they are thoroughly evaluated by an embryologist. The next step is to get these eggs fertilized by sperms that may be extracted from the husband/male partner or come from the sperm bank (donated sperm). The sperm is then placed along with the egg or injected into it.
How the donor and the recipient get prepared for the process?
It is very important that the recipient’s womb is prepared for the embryo transfer in time with the donor’s stimulation process, so that they are ready at the same time. When the donor starts taking the medicines for stimulating her ovaries, the recipient is prescribed with doses of estrogen to develop her uterine lining. Around the time of egg retrieval, the recipient is on progesterone to enable the implant of the fertilized egg (embryo). The embryo(s) are transferred to the recipient’s uterus 3-5 days after fertilization. The recipient continues with her hormone doses till the pregnancy test is done. These hormone doses continue for the first trimester of pregnancy, if the test is positive.
The recipient and her partner get tested for all the sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, Hepatitis B and C and other genetic disorders. The recipient also undergoes pelvic examination and a thorough assessment of her womb. Some extra precautions are required if she is above 45 years. She needs to be monitored for proper heart functionality and high-risk pregnancy related diseases by a gynecologist who specializes in high-risk pregnancy.
Who has to opt for the donor egg program?
A woman has to depend on donated eggs if:-
- She is born without ovaries
- She has generic disorders
- She has attained menopause
- Her ovaries did not respond to medical stimulation
- She has poor egg quality that resulted in poor embryo development during past IVF cycles.

- She should be free from infections like HIV, Hepatitis B and C, gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, syphilis and cystic fibrosis gene.
- She should free from addictions like drugs and smoking

The success rate shows the average birth rate per embryo transfer is about 55 % for all donor egg programs. However, using a donor’s egg generally does not always guaranty successful pregnancy. However, it enhances a woman’s chance of getting pregnant to a considerable extent which was not possible with her own eggs.
Does egg donation affect the donor’s fertility?
No, absolutely not. The donor will never have any fertility related issues resulting from egg donation. However, the donor egg program needs to be carried out with efficiency and with complete care so that no damage is incurred to the ovaries or to the eggs that are extracted.
Who arranges for a donor for the donor egg program?
We at Sridevi Fertility arrange for healthy donors (anonymous donors) for the Intended Parents , However, the Intended Parents may also choose a donor, who might be related to them and agrees to donate her eggs (known donor).
The identity of anonymous donor is generally not disclosed to the Intended Parents, they are just informed about her physical traits, her ethnicity, education, family background etc. The Intended Parents can also opt for eggs from the egg banks within the donor egg program.
